Mach 5

So over on yahoo they announced that Christina Ricci has joined the cast for the Speed Racer project:

Christina Ricci is joining “Matrix” creators Larryand Andy Wachowski’s live-action adaptation of the 1960s cartoon “SpeedRacer.” Emile Hirsch,Susan Sarandon and John Goodman already haveboarded the high-octane Warner Bros. project, which is based on theanime series created by Tatsuo Yoshida for Japanese audiences and laterimported to the U.S.

“Speed” centers on a young race car driver, Speed(Hirsch), and his quest for glory in his thundering, gadget-ladenvehicle Mach 5. Ricci will star as Speed’s girlfriend Trixie, hisformidable ally on and off the track.

Sounds good and all. Always great to have some decent sex appeal for a film, and that Ricci girl is drenched in sex appeal. I’m curious as to what kind of films these guys are trying to construct. I’ve always viewed them as very meticulous directors, visually and with their scripts. Those young enough to remember the cartoon know that the animation was a little knee jerk, and dialog was read at warp speed to try to imply lip sync with the animation. I wonder if the directors are going for more of a re-interpretation of the franchise, or a something else? Either way, they have my attention.
