Red Faction 3: Interview with Jeff Carroll

THQ is launching Red Faction 3 this June and we got a chance to speak with Jeff Carrol, Associate produce working on Red Faction: Guerilla. He was
kind enough gave us a little bit of 1 on 1 time while we played the game and explaining a few details on the upcoming title.

Can you first start the to introduce the game in your own interpretation?
Well. This is the 3rd game in the Red Faction series which has always been about two things: It’s been about destruction, and it’s been about revolution.
What you’re seeing today and what we’re showing is 8-player multiplayer. You can go up to 16 player. And everything that that exists above the ground can be destroyed. It can
be destroyed with full dynamic physics and it does damage to the people around you. If you take out the side of a building, the building will topple over sideways….

And they’ll be damaged by the debris?
Absolutely.

What they’re on their backs is also the backpack system which is the onetime power up.
You pick those up throughout the level, such as the rhino which lets you blast through indestructibly, horizontally, so you can go through anything. Thrust you can go horizontally like a jet-pack where you fly around.
Tremor is an earthquake around you that can take down buildings. And then you got standard weapons like an assault rifle, pistols, etc. We also have remote charges which you can plant itand they can stick them to anything, including people, and they can beset up and then set off to four of them and hit X to blow them.

Sounds like our kind of mayhem!

Then there’s an RPG, and arc welder which sends out electrical shocks to not only the people you’re aiming at, but also anybody standing near them. And the singluarity bomb that basically creates a little black hole that sucks everything into it, and then explodes.

What platforms will we see the game make an appearance?
This will be coming out on XBOX, PS3, and PC.

You’re primarily showing off multiplayer today, what else can we expect from the title at retail?
We also have a full single player campaign, open world, with up to 30hrs of gameplay.

How long has the game been in development?
It’s been about 2 years for the engine, and about 2 more years for the actual game.

Is this a proprietary engine?

We’re sitting on Havok underneath just to handle the collisions, but everything above that is proprietary and original. You know, we’ve been doing destruction since the original Red Faction. There’s no other gamethat can beat destruction like this.

Have you noticed the comparisons to other multiplayer titles that have possible been used as inspiration, like Crackdown? You know there’s a lot of that open world super powered vigilante.
Was there possibly any inspiration drawn from that game?

A little, i think we see Halo and Gears of War moreas our direct competitors. Gears of War has their cover system and wealso have a cover system in the single player but the cover doesntreally exist long enough to be used in the multiplayer.
You could trystanding behind a wall, and where you are behind that wall can easilybe just as dangerous.

How long does the typical multiplayer match usually last?
You can customize the match to up to 10 minutes, 20, an hour.

Thank you for your time.
