Quick Thoughts: Captain America The First Avenger

Captain America was ok. The most interesting parts I found were when Chris Evans was digitized as the smaller Steve Rogers, or the original one I should say. He played that roll well. I think the casting overall was excellent but seemingly under utilized. The two hours go by real fast and the action sequences are more montage than anything else, which really lessens the impact of things. You can tell Cap is just hitting his stride but never gets off into a full run. So honestly… while I thought the movie was ok. It was actually pretty plain and boring. I found Thor more intriguing based on the characters I think as near the end I wanted to see how Cap would interact more in the modern world. To which I suspect Thor and Cap will be the main attractions to the Avengers movie when it comes out. A complaint I had about Chris Evans, while he put on the muscle… I don’t think he was big enough actually. In height at the very least. It’s not to say he had to be Big Poppa Pump big, but more of the football player shape Hemsworth did for Thor, so you got a sense of power from him. I never got the real sense of athleticism from Evans in this movie, it’s crazy to say I know. I just saw a dude who got big for a role, he didn’t seem very agile. Maybe chalk that up to the action scenes which showcased his fighting. He wasn’t fast and overpowering guys with his quickness as I expected him to do. Regardless I stand by what I said about his height. Cap should be 6’4″ at the very least.

Overall the films goes by too fast and is over before you can really appreciate it, or at least I could. I know I’m being heavily cynical, but it’s taking a lot to impress me nowadays. However again, the Avengers movie better induce multiple orgasms at this point. So much riding on it.

I liked the era setting, but it wasn’t presented effectively enough for me. So that does warrant a sense of wanting to see more of Cap having had this whole life before suddenly waking up in modern times. Everything seemed very comic book in how brief certain scenes were shown. I definitely got the feeling of the “Marvel Universe” from Cap though, so it really does gear up toward Avengers.
