Brian Kirk Might Direct Thor 2

Who is Brian Kirk? He’s the guy who’s directed a few episodes of the popular HBO show “Game of Thrones”, and what Marvel views as a perfect candidate to take over directing duties from the departing Kenneth Branaugh to bring our favorite Asgardian back to the silver screen.

Irish auteur Brian Kirk, best known for directing numerous episodes of the first season of HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones”, is reportedly under major consideration to helm a “Thor” sequel for Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures says Variety.  The choice isn’t a surprise. With ‘Thrones’ he has demonstrated a strong ability to handle a grounded but fantastical setting populated with a large ensemble cast and a rich complex mythology.  The “Thor” sequel is expected to be on a larger scale than the first film with double the amount of Asgardian characters and the inclusion of various mythical Norse creatures. It’s currently slated for a late July 2013 release.

I like this news a lot. Game of Thrones was a surprise hit and if this director is capable of bringing that same tone and balance to the fantastic world that Thor inhabits, then I can’t help but think that Marvel might be able to develop another hit movie with the Thor sequel.  Now the guy is unproven, but I’m willing to give him a shot. I really liked Game of Thrones and the huge ensemble cast and balancing the development of all the characters. The idea is that Thor 2 will have more Asgardians involved in the movie, and I can’t help but think that might be a good thing.
