Looselips: it only does everything…meaning?

So I finally broke down and bought a PS3. I have to admit, the potential of the system has me a little overwhelmed as this device may be exactly what I need to bridge the gap between the PC and my TV. Maybe.

I bought the PS3 Slim 250 GB. As Ghostdad can testify, I was very hesistant to purchase the hardware, especially so many years since it launched! I was hoping that I could miss one console generation without *having* to own every platform.

Nothing could sway me from the satisfaction of the 360. I remember the day I made up my mind to buy a 360. About 30 seconds after PS3 announced its $599 launch price point. I bought a 360 about a month later for $300 and bought Burnout Revenge as my first game. At the time I felt it was the smartest gaming decision I had made since playing through FF7.

Now back to the PS3. It took me a couple of days to warm up to the thing as it sat dead center of my bedroom and beginning to collect dust. Rather than buy a game I bought a movie to test out the visual fidelity of this new technology. The Dark Knight on Blu Ray looks a lot like the Dark Knight on an HD channel to me. Not a waste of $10, but it was still a lesson learned. I downloaded a couple of demo’s I still haven’t played and I borrowed a couple of games from Psychoblack to hold me over until I bought a game of my own.

I decided to start with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. The game is beautiful. I don’t know if Gears of War 3 impressed me nearly as much on first site but I like the detail and colors that pop out at me with this game. The dialogue is pretty cheesy, but I like treasure hunting movies like Indiana Jones and those Nicholas Cage movies, so this one has an advantage over most games. I’m not a fan of the gunplay or simplified cover system. The story really isn’t the best of work, but it’s playable! I realize as I’m a pretty jaded gamer with incredibly high expectations from some games, and I just feel that this wasn’t the best introduction to the PS3 for me.

I also have MGS4 sitting aside, waiting to get installed and booted. Soon. I expect MGS4 to assuage any doubts and fears I have buried for the PS3, but it will also devour my time and attention from all other aspects of my life. I have to plan carefully or I will learn to pay for my transgressions as I did with FF7 and starting summer school. Never again. Too hot for that crap.
