Impression: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

I caught Scott Pilgrim this weekend. It got moved to the cheap theatres up here but is still available at the local cinemas for regular price. I only paid $3.50 for admission and even then my cousin treated me so I paid nothing. I’m not much of a Cera fan, he’s a little too timid and soft spoken. I think they could’ve just as well not casted him in the role and got someone else. However I will say I didn’t mind him in the role and there are moments where he plays the Scott Pilgrim character well, at least what I’m seeing on screen. I just really wonder about his star power, I guess in some ways he’s perfect for the role in today’s generation. Personally speaking I’m curious if they could’ve cast someone else as the rest of the cast was a bunch of unknowns with the odd cameo role type played by the evil exes. That being said, my main complaint is just Cera in general. He’s a turn off in some ways and maybe that’s why this film bombed. Over saturation over the past couple years and what looked to be the same type of acting delivered by him. There are moments however where he shines and that’s where he plays the Scott Pilgrim character. It’s these scenes where I don’t see the usual Cera. Ok that being said, if you’ve read up to this point my only complaint is Cera and that there is my personal bias.

This film is simply one of the best films I’ve seen in recent memory. It’s completely memorable, the pacing was perfect, what was translated into a movie from the comics was fantastic as well. I read up on the comics afterward and they cut out a substantial amount but at the same time told a story within it’s context. If you remember Wright was the director and he did the high energy Hot Fuzz and Crank series. This film is his masterpiece, the subtle and over the top inclusions of video game, music, comic references and how they are used are perfect. I enjoyed this movie thoroughly. Simply put is the perfect video game, nerd, comic book, stylized movie. It’s campy, over the top, cheesy, humorous, ridiculous but downright fun.
