Quick Thoughts: Tales of Earthsea

Now I saw Tales of Earthsea and why this film didn’t get much publicly as the other two is beyond my mind. All of Studio Ghibli’s movies are fantastic and I expected nothing less from this film. It’s important to know that this film was not directed by Hayao MiyazakI and was instead directed by his son Gorō Miyazaki.

The story is about how humans and dragons once peacefully co-existed. Things turn horribly bad one night during a storm when dragons appeared, fought, and one ended up dead. This event displaces the balance of the world and everyone and everything is in danger. We follow a prince who killed his father; a wizard who saves him, and a girl.

Some of the back story is unresolved as it doesn’t really explain how all these people fit in together. Now you have this Prince who killed his father but we never really have a good explanation as to way he did it. Only thing I know is that he spazzes out from time to time. I had no issues with the wizard, his story was explained well and clear He seems humble enough and was king enough to help this young man who he supposedly had no idea was a prince. The girl is another plot point that I prefer not to spoil.

The film wasnt bad, but it very slowly paced which led my friends and I to say “WTF” happen Ghibli, why did you drop the ball on this film?” Others have opined that the movie was bad, and everyone is entitled to there own opinion. I think it’s just slow paced and more story driven.  It did seem like one of the films that need more action, but it was a movie with morals and that was satisfying for me.
