Quick Thoughts: Jonah Hex

So this weekend I watched Jonah Hex.

You know the movie with Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, Malkovic about that western bounty hunter who can speak to the dead. I thought this movie was going to be more supernatural and I’m guessing in the DC comics that’s how it is. It was a side bar in this movie. Let me restate that, in this absolutely horrible movie.

From the initial scenes the cinematography was off for me. The setting, the locale, I know it’s the wild west… but it was absolutely bad. I never once felt like the wild west to me. It made Wild Wild West with Will Smith look good. At least that felt more western.

The storyline itself was cliche and with how things panned out and Malkovic being there you knew his character involvement already. So it was foolish to try to do what they tried to do with the storyline in respect to narrating it to the audience. Also Megan Fox, completely useless in this movie, her character was useless. The whole movie was useless.  I honestly don’t know what they were trying to do with the movie in general, but the fact it never once felt like a western film to me was a bad selling point. I think they thought, let’s merely film this movie in Arizona and it’ll be ok.

Maybe they though that a ‘cool’ character would be enough as per the movie posters and marketing. I almost fell asleep in this movie, pretty sure I did for a couple seconds in the final act when all the explosions and such and fight were going off. I didn’t get enough from his character, Brolin is a capable actor, but I think in general it was the storyline and writing. Then you add shitty art direction and vision and you get this crap. I think they thought casting Megan Fox was a good idea too based on her supposed ‘hotness’. Honestly any female actor could’ve played this role, a lesser known actor would’ve been more warranted. I’m pretty damn sure they used video game bloom effects on her face too!
